Comancheria's Edge
Beginning in the early 1700's, the Comanche Nation became one of the most powerful Native American Tribes in North America. Eventually their "Empire" or territory would include Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and a large portion of New Mexico. During their heyday, the "Numuhnuh" were an important source of trade and commerce for the isolated Province of New Mexico. For over a hundred and fifty years, their long forgotten empire, known as Comancheria, had a profound influence on not only the growth of what would later be known as the New Mexico Territory, but on New Mexico villages from Tome' to Santa Fe, northward to Abiquiu, Chimayo, Truchas, Taos, Cimmaron and beyond. Today, in a mixture of defiance and emulation, remnants of their legacy, heritage, and customs stll survive in the form of dance and religious celebration- events honoring the historic relations of war and peace with the once great Numuhnuh. This ongoing series is but a small sampling of the people, animals, and remnants that remain and exist in a territory long forgotten - a land of Comancheros and cattle, horses and buffalo, pueblos and churches. A land I call...Comancheria's Edge.
